Sunday was Father’s Day and I decided to surprise my parents with a flower garden! They were SO SURPRISED when I showed up with a car packed with flowers! I found a great variety of perennials at Home Depot. While I normally like to buy from a variety of locally owned garden shops, Home Depot has a 1 year plant guarantee which is really nice!

Today I went back over to my parents house to help with the planting. It was the most perfect gardening day. A little cooler (finally!) and a gentle breeze with bits of sun and clouds. We took rest breaks on their screened porch and sipped on lemonade. It was so nice to be outside and breathe some fresh air!

Prepping the flower bed

Getting started, we first prepped the soil by adding in some soil amendment and tilling the area, then raking it smooth.

Next we played around with the placement of the plants until we had everything arranged just right. Part sun plants were placed in areas where they will receive a little more shade. This part probably took the longest, but its best to take your time to ensure things are properly spaced and aesthetically pleasing.

After we finished making a huge mess, my mom came out to help with clean up!

Once the plants were arranged, we started digging the holes and placing them in the ground!

And here is the finished product!  Seeing all the colors and textures makes me so happy. I hope Mom and Dad will enjoy this Father's Day surprise garden for years to come! More than anything, today was special because I was able to spend some quality time with my parents. Taking time to spend with people you love is something you will never regret or forget! It’s invaluable.
